THE CAPTIVATING LESSONS YOU NEED
TO MASTER LIGHT, SHADE, AND FORM

And hear your viewers say,
“Wow! I feel like I could reach right in and touch the leaves of those flowers!”

You’re an artist. Artists are always striving to perfect their craft and technique. You want to get better, you try to get better, but you’re stuck.

And it’s frustrating.

  • Why are my shapes so flat?
  • Why aren’t my highlights popping?
  • Why isn’t my composition reading well?
  • Why isn’t my focal point drawing the eye in?

And the WHY's always lead to the big how's … HOW do I make it better?

You know instruction from a master artist is the BEST way to get better, but accessing that instruction is challenging:

→  Getting to the in-person workshops is a huge investment of time, energy, and money:
Plane tickets, hotel reservations, meals out, packing up all your supplies. {And then, you just have to hope you can see & hear the instructor!}

→  Scheduling is problematic:
You have family members to care for, vacations scheduled, and work commitments. {And if you become ill during that time, you lose out!}

→  Your local classes might be accessible and the schedule might work:
But just because they are teaching doesn’t mean they are qualified. {There’s a good chance you may be more skilled than the instructor!}

→  Discovering a live workshop you want to attend is already full.
With credit card in hand, “SOLD OUT” flashes across your screen. {Better luck next year!}

→  Maybe you do go to in-person workshops but then this happens:
You get back to your studio full of motivation, only you can’t replicate what you saw, your notes aren’t sufficient, and you have no one to ask for help. {Now how did she do that? Argh.}

So you have two choices:

One, you can:

Keep on doing what you’re doing, trying to figure it out on your own. {And get cozy with the tedious process of trial and error.}

Maybe you’ll get there one day.

Or ...

Two, you can:

STUDY WITH A MENTOR ARTIST FOR A FULL YEAR
FROM THE COMFORT OF YOUR OWN STUDIO.

WAIT, WHAT? Is that even possible??

Why yes, yes it is.

Imagine:

  • A master artist (and experienced instructor) by your side for 365 days.
  • Recorded lessons you can watch over and over again.
  • No schedule so you learn when it’s convenient for YOU.
  • No travel stress - no planes to catch, supplies to pack, or reservations to make.
  • You learn at your pace - practice as much as you want before you go to the next lesson.
  • Get feedback from your instructor on your work.
  • Enjoy communication with your mentor artist throughout the 365 days to ask your questions and help you resolve challenges as they arise.

And then you’ll feel:

  • Thrilled because you achieved in just weeks or months what would have taken YEARS to figure out on your own.
  • Inspired and motivated because you know what to do.
  • More confident in your skills as an artist.
  • Proud to offer your art as gifts to friends and families.
  • Excited to enter that juried show or approach a gallery.

Even if you’ve been painting for years and think your work has a 3-dimensional feel ...

Even if you’ve only been painting for a little while and know you have much to learn ...

Even if you don’t paint still lifes or use oils, but paint in other genres or use other mediums ...

Every artist aspires to get better and deepen their ability
to represent light, shape and form
.

BE AN ARTIST WHO NOW KNOWS HOW TO WORK
WITH LIGHT, SHAPE, AND FORM LIKE THE MASTERS
TO PAINT STUNNING 3-DIMENSIONAL PAINTINGS.

If your paintings aren’t as high-level as you want them to be
… chances are at least one of these is holding you back:

→ You haven’t mastered the limiting palette artists have to work with (not nearly as rich and varied as Mother Nature’s palette).

→ You aren’t working effectively with light and shadow.

→ You haven’t created a focal point and path to lead your viewer’s eye around your painting successfully.

→ You haven’t mastered which edges to leave or take away - and which ones to make sharper or softer.

→ The arranging process is intimidating and eludes you.

But here’s the fine art fabulous news.
We can change that. Together.

WHAT’S INSIDE ...
THE PUZZLE OF PAINTING WITH LAURA ROBB

MODULE 1 | VALUES AND SHAPES

This module advances your ability to use hues, values, and chroma to create realistic images. Correct use of light and dark with shape are essential to achieve a convincing illusion of light and depth.

LAURA TEACHES YOU HOW TO:

  • Set up your still life to get the background you want with the shadows you need.
  • Push your shades darker and your values lighter (while avoiding the anemic look).
  • Avoid diluting your light and shade to keep your painting looking believable, like you could reach out and pick up that flower.
  • Use the power of your palette to get what you want as an end result in your painting.
  • Use shadow to connect your elements.
  • SEE differently, with tricks to counteract what our minds THINK we see and how an object SHOULD look.

Plus you’ll learn the first three moves Laura makes in every painting she does to make sure she gets the end result she wants. And, you’ll understand how to develop planes, one of the hardest, yet most important, skills to learn.

MODULE 2 | MAKING THE MOST OF CHROMA

This module heightens your understanding of the power and limitations of your palette. Chroma is the most difficult aspect of color for people to grasp yet essential to realistically represent objects like clear glass, colored glass, and metals.

LAURA TEACHES YOU HOW TO:

  • Handle chroma problems when working with flowers.
  • How to get shiny highlights to pop.
  • How to make glass read like glass.
  • Preserve the chroma.
  • Apply the rules of light, shade, and form so your painting will read better.

Plus, Laura will teach you to identify highlights that don’t help the viewer so you can avoid them in your painting. And, you’ll come away fully understanding the difference between value and chroma, a critical takeaway for any artist.

MODULE 3 | USING COLOR TO CREATE FORM

This module strengthens your ability to SEE like an ARTIST. Our minds want us to draw how we THINK something should look. These preconceptions don’t reflect what is actually before us and we must see shapes and forms for what they truly are.

LAURA TEACHES YOU HOW TO:

  • Make statements with the negative shapes.
  • Use a triad instead of complements to get the effects of light and color she achieves in her work.
  • Start by getting the lights and shades right first, instead of focusing on the drawing when you start.
  • Fix problems and solve on the run … like when you’ve got a background color too close to the flower’s color or two notes of color are coming up against each other.
  • Light flowers - sometimes tricky because of their transparency.

Plus, Laura will teach you how to paint an irresistible focal point with values, edges, chroma, and size. And, you’ll learn what to do first in your composition to avoid beginner mistakes.

MODULE 4 | PUTTING THE PUZZLE TOGETHER

This module helps you combine hue, value, composition, edges, and details to create a compelling and harmonious work of art. One that makes you smile and say, “Yes! I get it now.”

LAURA TEACHES YOU HOW TO:

  • Pull in the viewer’s eye and travel the path you intentionally set in your painting.
  • Lead the eye around in a not-too-obvious way.
  • Preserve the depth (and foregoing color if necessary).
  • Know when to give up some of the color or put the color elsewhere to keep the focal point.
  • Determine when you don’t need to be anatomically correct.

Plus, Laura will teach you how to achieve a sense of depth and notes of color before you attend to shape. And, you’ll learn why starting with your focal point drives the other notes in your painting, and that will save you a lot of time and frustration.

Please note* Laura’s The Puzzle of Painting Online course is designed with video demonstrations & lessons on still life paintings in oils. However, Laura’s focus is to teach you the basic fundamentals; drawing, composition, values and use of color. Laura is a diverse artist and believes if you understand these elements you can apply them to any subject (figures, portraits, landscapes, etc.) and easily to your choice of medium (acrylics, gouache & pastels)

"Laura - Always love your work not only for the beautiful edges, brush/knife work, and strong composition, but also for the way you lead the eye around and the way you intentionally engage the viewer, and magnify what the paint has to say. "

- LINDA MICHAELS

She has exhibited in numerous group and solo shows and received many awards for her painting. Her work has appeared in dozens of publications over the years.

ABOUT TUCSON ART ACADEMY ONLINE
(TAAO)

We are Gábor & Christine Svagrik

Art is our passion and bringing master artist instructors right to you in your own studio is our mission.

We love physical workshops, but they have their limitations.

→They end way too fast.

→ They require travel, extra expenses, and lugging your materials with you.

→ The dates and times often conflict with your availability.

→ If you can’t make sense of your notes or quite remember how the instructor did something, you’re out of luck.

But we know it can be so frustrating and disheartening to work hard at perfecting your art to only be hit with more stumbling blocks.

So we asked ourselves, ”How can we make world-class art instruction available to everyone who wants it?”

And so, our NEW 365 Day Access with Mentoring series was born. Now students around the world can access some of the most celebrated artists (with incredible teaching ability) available today.

We are delighted to bring our favorite artists to your doorstep.

We couldn’t be more thrilled to make esteemed artist Laura Robb available to you. You'll get her guidance, support, teaching, and mentorship for a full year.

You won’t find Laura Robb’s course, The Puzzle of Painting, anywhere else.

Only inside Tucson Art Academy Online.

we’re only asking for one payment of $595 USD.

(That comes out to less than $50/month for mentorship

SOME QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE

Will this course help me even if I don’t do still lifes?

YES. Whether you paint still lifes, landscapes, figures or abstract … whether you use oils, acrylics, pastels, or watercolors, Laura’s course will teach you fundamentals, techniques, and skills that EVERY artist needs. It’s like being in Laura’s studio watching her paint with the INCREDIBLE opportunity to rewind and listen again while you apply her techinques to your own canvas.

I’m not techy … is this course easy to use?

YES. All you need to do is log in and click “play”. You can pause, rewind or fast forward in each lesson. As long as your device is connected to the internet, you’re all set!

Is this for beginners or advanced students?

Laura’s class is designed for all skill levels. The modules advance in skills and deepen the complexity of how you handle colors, values, chroma, and shapes as you go.

Do I have deadlines to finish modules or turn in assignments during the year?

NO. You have full access for 365 days and that means you can go at your own pace and spend more time in the lessons that are pushing you at the edge of your development.

How often will Laura critique my work? Does she have weekly office hours or how do I communicate with Laura?

Every month you have the opportunity to submit examples of your paintings and/or questions to be considered for inclusion in the group critiques. These are not live sessions. Each month Laura dives deep into the Office Hour group critiques. She chooses from among those submitted and prepares several critiques. Students LOVE these the most because you not only hear but see the suggested changes right before your eyes in a recorded video, you can login, watch, stop and rewind as often as you wish. Every student benefits from each other which makes for a very strong learning tool. Plus students use these as a spring board to prepare themselves for the next critique or to ask questions in between.

I understand the course is self-paced with access for a full year, but what sort of weekly time commitment should I expect to make so I can progress?

Most students average about 3 to 5 hours a week. Laura suggests progressing through the core modules in sequence to see the best results in your work. Again, it really depends on what your schedule allows. Maybe some weeks you have 8 hours and some weeks you have none. Laura suggests painting regularly and putting what you learn into practice. Plus each month Laura will be adding additional educational video content to the course to help you progress. It’s a ever building library of short tutorial videos that Laura creates to answer questions and show you how to fix problems in your own paintings.
