Learn to create wonderful, loose, suggestive, watercolor paintings.
Watch as Andy paints 4 start to finish watercolor demonstrations and supporting concepts covering key techniques you'll be learning in each module. He gives a play-by-play of what heâs doing and why so you can apply this directly to your paintings.
He'll discuss and help you focus on the different types of washes used in watercolor; wet-in-wet, wet-on-dry, and dry-on-dry, or dry brush. Knowing when to use each type is important in creating convincing landscapes. You'll learn not only to analyze your chosen subject but how to create a solid blueprint to build your next painting.
Through the modules, youâll be invited to complete studies on references of your choosing (Andy will supply a package of photos for you to use if you like). You can always ask Andy for help or feedback on your painting inside his private-student Facebook group.
Inside this module, we will focus on the different types of washes used in watercolor; wet-in-wet, wet-on-dry, and dry-on-dry, or dry brush. Knowing when to use each type is important in creating convincing landscapes. The demonstration painting in this module has a large dramatic sky, and this was handled wet-into-wet as the paper was drying. This can be the most difficult type of wash for students to master and can lead to blooms and 'muddiness' if you're not judging the consistency of your puddles and dampness of your paper correctly. I'll also cover the importance of judging the value of your wash as you lay it in, depending on how much drying it has to do. Lastly, I'll discuss how to create texture and movement with a dry brush and how to handle foregrounds in your work.
Value studies help us to simplify and find connections. The process starts with how to judge color as value, something that many students struggle with. Color is obvious to most, but seeing its correct value can make the difference between a successful painting and a visually confusing one. I'll be talking about drawing and ways to speed up the process by concentrating on the large shapes as well as the importance of leaving things like trees and shadows, what I refer to as 'free form' shapes, to your brushwork. We'll also cover negative shape-making, an underappreciated aspect unique to watercolor due to its transparency.
This is when we will cover the importance of designing your painting through values and ways to create a more dynamic painting when there aren't many shapes to deal with. Too often, we find ourselves a slave to the reference photo, and there are simple ways to improve your subject that are much easier to see first with a value study. I will also cover the importance of having an area of interest and ways to keep the rest of your painting from distracting from it. I will then illustrate these points with a winter scene demonstration and discuss the color of snow and touch on reflected light.
In this module, we'll focus on handling and placing figures in various landscape paintings. It's important that people appear to be moving or at rest without overworking them, as they tend to draw enough attention as it is. I discuss how to make sure your figures are incorporated into your painting from the start; too often, figures appear as 'holes' in a painting, completely separate from their surroundings. I'll also discuss simplifying complex backgrounds so they don't compete with your mid and foreground. To wrap up, I will show you all this in a demonstration, plus how to mix more convincing greens without resorting to tube greens and demonstrate various ways to paint trees.
Please note* { Andy's course was designed for students who utilize watercolors as their preferred medium. However, if you opt for oil, acrylics, or pastels, you must modify Andy's techniques to accommodate the approach of working from dark to light. }
There are more than 15 hours of pre-recorded video oil demonstrations. Dive into each one when your schedule allows. They are available to you online 24/7 for one full year on desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone. All you need is an internet connection. Paint alongside Andy with each video and rewatch them as often as you need. You have all year with Andy's course concepts, and it will be a good one!
Inside you will find photo reference packages of Andyâs own hand-selected images - ready for you to work from. You can easily practice what you've been learning by using them as you wish throughout the year. You are not required to use the photos - youâre always welcome to develop your own composition.
span>In addition to the videos within the five core modules and their suggested assignments, Andy will record a NEW video lesson addressing a topic with tips & techniques to try in your paintings. If you think of a topic that you would like Andy to expand on, let him know! Students always mention how much they enjoy receiving each new artistic concept throughout the year.Â
Here's a sneak peek inside this growing library since the course first opened. Gain access to these and many more while enrolled:
- Value Study Changes
-Â Color Theory
- Edge Control
- Contour Lines
Please note this is NOT a live critique you watch at a specific time. It is recorded and added to the course. You will hear and see him digitally correct students' submissions right before your eyes. These critiques are valuable because Andy is allowed more time to go in-depth into the painting and cover more detail than what is posted in his private student Facebook community. On the chosen submissions, see Andy peel back the layers, show what is working, and fix the areas that are not. The best part about these recorded videos is that you can stop and rewind Andy's critique and see how to improve your original painting. {Additionally, you will gain immediate access to a comprehensive archive of Andyâs previous critiques of student work that spans the entire duration of the course}.
Get ongoing support in Andyâs private Facebook community, which is only available to enrolled students. When you post your painting inside the group, you'll receive guidance, feedback from Andy, and new ideas, plus you can see what other students are asking, so you can learn from their journeys as well! It's a global community of artists all working alongside each other. This kind of genuine support and connection online makes a huge difference in your growth, so come with your questions!

"This course was by far the best money I've EVER SPENT. In the beginning, my knowledge base and skillsets were small, but this course is far more universal in its application. It was just a matter of getting familiar with the medium and experimenting and Andy helped me do just that. Andy was real driving force to my success. He enabled me to have fun and paint away from the get go. Anyway.....it's been an amazing opportunity and a wonderful course and easily worth a $1000/year as well. The amount of information in this course is profound, with nothing left unturned. "
"I've been quietly enjoying my online lessons and painting but I absolutely love Andy's private student FB community for help, support and the sharing. It is the best because thereâs always something new to look forward to. I can't say enough Andy âŚyou are a great teacher. The course your brings a daily smile to my face and my life. I've learned so much online in this course and on my limited schedule I donât know if I would have continued or kept at it all on my own. I can't thank you enough for sharing your knowledge and being there as a caring mentor for all your students."
"Andy makes you feel confident about what you have to do and what your next steps are⌠so you can keep moving forward no matter what. This online course has well exceed my expectations. I enjoy not being pressured for time and can paint on my schedule and then ask Andy for help in his private FB community. His new lessons that are added monthly seem to always address issues I'm having. Doing a workshop seems so VERY expensive now without a lot of benefits. I would highly recommend this online format to all my art friends."
"Andy helped me correct problems I didn't even know were out of control. He leaves no stone left unturned in this course. He covers everything a watercolorist needs to paint successfully *without* frustration. I thought I was buying information and instruction and I definitely got those, but I also got so much more. I will be continuing as an alumni once my year ends for sure! "
ANDY EVANSEN
His interest in art started in childhood, as he canât recall a time when he wasnât drawing. He began painting watercolors in the mid-1990s as a change of pace from his career as a medical illustrator. Choosing a âstyleâ was not difficult, as Andy was always inspired by the watercolor paintings of British artists Trevor Chamberlain, David Curtis, Ed Seago, and Edward Wesson, among others.
He found himself attempting to capture the landscape with the same economy of brushstroke, taking advantage of the luminosity of watercolors done in just a few washes. In addition, he was impressed with the way those artists seemed to capture everyday scenes in such a way that revealed a hidden beauty, subjects that many would simply pass by.
For Andy, watercolor is the perfect medium for capturing those beautiful, fleeting moments in time. Watercolor doesn't allow for much overworking. It's a very immediate, intuitive medium and I feel it's transparency is perfect for depicting light. I enjoy teaching and sharing these techniques with all my students.

In this 50-minute never-before-seen video, Andy shares how to choose a good subject to paint.
One of the most common mistakes students make has nothing to do with the actual painting process. Rather, it's choosing a subject that is either too much to handle, too 'pretty', or too vague, setting themselves up for failure or disappointment from the start. Andy wants to help eliminate this frustration for you.
In this video, Andy discusses what he looks for when choosing his subjects, and shows some examples of his work while describing why he painted them. You'll see his thought process and blueprint. He'll also talk about solutions to the problem of bad photographs and what you should be thinking about when selecting a good subject so you can finish with success.
Only students that enroll in the course get this special bonus video - itâs not available for purchase anywhere.
It's yours to download and KEEP for further learning after your year ends.
**A note about the Facebook community** Participation in the private FB group isnât required. However, connecting with Andy and other students will accelerate your learning throughout the year. If you want, you can observe and read everything. But we encourage you to post a painting or comment because no one, but the students and Andy in the group, will see what you have posted. The general public never sees inside and will never see your posted paintings or questions, only Andy and the other students in the course.
Get past the starting line & onto RESULTS.
